Harold
L. Merkle became Van Wert County Commissioner on January 1, 2003.
He is a native of Van Wert County.
He has graduated from Wren High School in 1952.
His
objective as County Commissioner is to keep the County fiscally sound
and work closely with all elected officials of Van Wert County and City.
He has
served as Van Wert County Treasurer from September 1, 1993, until
November 30, 2002. Prior to
his time as County Treasurer, he owned and operated Merkle Insurance for
17 years. He had also
worked for the Dayton Power and Light Co. (14 years), and the Ohio State
University (5 years). He
holds a Real Estate Brokers License.
He is a Graduate of the Ohio State University with a degree in
Agricultural Engineering.
He also
serves on the Corrections Board, 911 Board, Convention and Visitors
Bureau, a member of the Van Wert County Investment Committee, and serves
as President of M.E.B.C. (5 county insurance consortium).
He has been active in Community affairs, having served on the
Tri-County Board of Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services,
the Crestview Board of Education (8 years), and the Van Wert County
Cultural Exchange Committee. Professionally, he is a member of the
County Commissioners Association of Ohio.
He has
been a Republican Central Committeeman from Harrison Township for 25
years. A member of the
Convoy Lion Club, he was Governor of District 13A Lions International in
1993-94. Presently, he is a
Trustee and Vice President of the Ohio Lions Foundation.
He is
also a member of the Van Wert County Farm Bureau, Van Wert Downtown
Development Association, the Van Wert & Paulding County Ohio State
Alumni Club, and serves on the Van Wert County 4-H Enrichment and
Endowment Committee.
Harold
and Janet, his wife, are active in the First United Methodist Church and
have four children: Angela,
Kevin, Jeffrey, and Janelle along with 13 grandchildren and 2 great
grand children.
